Release: Nadia Status: Works perfectly Owner: What works: The hardware as listed is NOT exactly what I intend to use. I couldn't change some of the input fields. I intend to try to revive a slightly older laptop, which is a real oddball. It uses a DESKTOP P4 @ 2.4Ghz, not hyper threaded or dual core, and ONE stick of DESKTOP DDR! No, I'm not making this up) The laptop in question is a Implitech Gericom Hummer 755II0, (see this site: It has very few gee-wiz-bang features, except for one.

I really like that it has connectors for about anything you ever heard of. From the very old, like CF drives, to the latest USB thumb drives and memory sticks. That means I can reuse a lot of my older stuff I still have still laying around. Sadly, my daughter destroyed the hard drive, including the OS it came with. (Win-XP Pro 32 bit) The drivers and all that stuff make reloading Windows difficult.

It WILL load, but then, not much works! Like Sound, touch pad, etc. So, I've decided that the daughter who ruined the hard drive in a fit, by throwing the laptop, can just learn from her mistake, AND learn something useful, other than being spoon- fed Windows. She can make the effort to learn something worthwhile, like Linux. Not only that, but as I paid for the new drive, I will choose the OS! If she doesn't like it, then she should stop throwing fits and laptops!

I bought all 3 of my daughters a used one, back before I found out I would be getting custody of them after a divorce. I didn't want my soon-to-be ex-wife to get anything (more) of great value from me, by taking it away from the kids.

(Like all the other stuff she had) So I bought used, yet functional older laptops so my girls, who had been kidnapped by their mother) could still do homework and such. Of course, at such cheap prices, the laptops didn't come with a restore disk, or even any built-in way to make any. It was just Pot Luck as to what hardware was available on any given day. Thus, I had NO way of restoring the OS with it's drivers and other specific software.

This particular machine doesn't seem to be for the American market. Nor standard in hardly any way. (I think it's Hungarian made) Anyway, I've tried several flavors of Linux over the years, and only two stand out in my mind: PC Linux OS and MINT. (With Fedora bring up the rear in a close third place) Ubuntu just doesn't run well on my older hardware. Nor even my newer stuff. I don't know why, but there always seems to be some issue or other, and it fails as often as it works.

(Even the older versions, going back to 6.10, the first Linux I ever saw!) I'm hoping that MINT looks, and work, as well on the laptop as it did on my office machine (in LIVE mode) Admittedly, my office machine is a better, more and more powerful one, but then, that was purely in live mode, and not installed. I have no choice there. With it installed on the laptop's hard drive, I'm hoping MINT, using Xfce, runs fast enough to still be useful for homework and such. I'm NOT rewarding my daughter for throwing the old Laptop by buying her a new one! Buying a new, bigger, faster hard drive was quite enough. Arduino serial even parity.
