This workout's perfectly fine -- it features Jillian Michaels (the tougher/meaner of the two 'Biggest Loser' trainers) front and center, doing an interesting hybrid of Ashtanga yoga moves (done faster than typical) and mild cardio. Most of the moves involve holding a yoga pose (Chair Lunge with a Twist, for example, or Half Moon) for a moment or two, and then quickly moving in and out of the pose to give your blood a little pump. Michaels doesn't establish much of a flow between exercises or poses, nor does she bother with setting any sort of serene or zen-like atmosphere. Instead, the focus is clearly on power and movement rather than flexibility and balance (though she does spend some time trying -- and sometimes failing -- to stay balanced on one foot).
I, for one, didn't mind it. It's definitely not 'yoga' in the traditional sense, and I don't think I 'burn[ed] mega calories' as indicated on the cover of the DVD box, but it was a good change of pace. Plus, while the session required more than a modicum of effort, it was low-key enough to qualify as a recovery workout. One other thing I liked about this workout: We did. I kind of wish Michaels didn't keep referring to the audience as 'girls,' though. I already felt girly enough without the reminder that this DVD is targeted at women, thankyouverymuch.

Yoga purists beware — the poses may be familiar, but the goals, sequencing and “bad ass” attitude are pure Jillian Michaels. For example, Jillian knows that a classic yoga chair pose is similar to a squat.
So, she has you “rep it out” — 15 full-range-of-motion repetitions that end with an isometric hold. That technique is repeated throughout the entire workout. So, while there are lots of genuine yoga elements, Jillian’s overall goal is muscle endurance (not “peaceful mind/body bliss”). The first workout is easier; the second has some tough balance and flexibility moves (modifications are shown).
5.0 out of 5 stars Finally.a yoga workout I actually enjoy! I ordered this DVD on my personal trainer's recommendation and am VERY glad I did! Yoga has always been difficult for me due to my freakishly short arms and moderate flexibility.plus, the 'relaxation' aspect associated with it always kind of turned me off. As a runner I have very limited time for indoor workouts and don't wish to waste it on anything that doesn't offer at least SOME toning and/or muscle endurance benefits. I have to say, this is IT!! This is the workout that packs a one-two punch for me.
Warning: Don't order this DVD if your goal is relaxation! I consider myself a yoga beginner simply because I've tried it before but hated it too much to continue. I was hooked on this workout from the first time I tried it and have done Level 1 three times per week since receiving it a month ago. Because it's so intense I use it on the same days as my weight training and put a day of recovery in between.
I have already noticed an improvement in my breathing when I run. I have been doing hot yoga for years. This dvd has all the same moves, but Jillian pumps it up a notch by adding the movement. I can totally see how this is a staff favorite.
Its definitely not for a beginner to yoga or someone looking for a relaxing yoga practice. It does state on the dvd that it is 'combines her hardcore fitness technique with the sculpting power of yoga' meaning intense no relaxation. Overall i love this dvd. I have been combining this with my insanity dvd's.
