Start a new savegame, do not use an old version since the changes the patch make only get activated in a new savegame. ( the patch work on the steam version ). Multiplayer.: The ingame multiplayer do not work anymore. So if you like to play multiplayer all players need a software such as 'hamachi' that allow you to play LAN games though the internet.

The claim that the other Guild's might be less buggy might be true, but Renaissance has all of the other 'features' that the earlier expansions have. Or so I read. The RuneForge message board reads that they know all of the corrections to the game that they need to make, but they don't have the resources to get them all fixed properly; and they don't want to release another patch unless it's the last. They also said that they will definitely make another patch.
